Black Streaks on Roof Shingles in Wesley Chapel: Gloeocapsa Magma Removal Explained
Black streaks on roof shingles are usually Gloeocapsa magma, a blue green algae that thrives in Florida humidity. ARMA says it spreads from roof to roof and hurts looks more than shingles. The fix is a low pressure soft wash, never a pressure washer, plus a plan to slow regrowth.
What Are the Black Streaks on My Roof?
What are the black streaks on my roof? Almost always algae, not mold or dirt. The most common type is Gloeocapsa magma, a blue green algae that makes a dark sheath to shield itself from sunlight. It grows where moisture lingers, which is why it thrives in humid Wesley Chapel.
The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association says these streaks are often mistaken for mold or mildew. They usually start as small spots and then turn into streaks. By the time you can see them, the algae has likely been there for several months or longer.
Shaded slopes under oak branches tend to darken first, since they stay damp longest. But algae can show up on any slope. A newer roof in Wiregrass Ranch or Epperson gets the same humidity as an older one in Seven Oaks. This guide covers asphalt shingle roofs. Tile and metal roofs follow different rules.
Do Black Streaks on Roof Shingles Cause Damage?
According to ARMA, there is no scientific evidence that algae damages asphalt shingles. It does hurt the look of a roof. On highly reflective cool roofs it can cut long term performance. The case for cleaning is mostly about looks, HOA rules, resale, and insurer letters. It is not an emergency.
Moss is different. ARMA says moss can lift shingle edges, raise the risk of blow off in wind, and cause leaks in severe cases. Fuzzy green or brown growth, or shingle edges that curl up, need a roofer’s eye. See our guide on how a dirty roof affects homeowners insurance for what insurers look at.
Still, ARMA advises dealing with algae soon, because waiting lets it spread to nearby roofs. And a stained roof can draw a letter from your HOA. See what HOA boards look for to understand how those notices work.
Why Does Roof Algae Spread Across a Whole Neighborhood?
Algae spores travel on wind and animals, ARMA says, and they settle on nearby roofs. That is why a whole street can darken within a few years. Cleaning one roof does not stop spores from landing again from the next one.
The 3.5 mile stretch of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard between SR 54 and SR 56 passes communities of many ages. Newer roofs sit near older ones in places like Wiregrass Ranch and Union Park, and they share the same spores.
Can You Pressure Wash a Roof?
No. ARMA says never use a pressure washer on an asphalt shingle roof, because it causes granule loss and very likely early failure of the roof. Soft washing uses a cleaning solution at low pressure instead. It cleans the streaks without stripping the granules that shield the shingle from sunlight.

How Do Professionals Handle Gloeocapsa Magma Removal?
The steps follow ARMA’s published method. Here is how a good crew works.
- Inspect the roof for lifted edges, moss, and bare granule spots before any water touches it.
- Wet down plants and cover fixtures so the solution does not reach them.
- Apply a cleaning solution with a low pressure sprayer.
- Let it dwell for 15 to 20 minutes, and do not let it dry on the shingles.
- Rinse with low pressure water.
- Expect the dead algae to keep fading as later rains wash it away.
ARMA’s own method is a bleach and water solution, so ask any crew what they use and how they protect your landscaping. Our page on how soft washing works explains our approach, and our roof soft washing page covers the service.
How Long Until Black Streaks on Roof Shingles Come Back?
It depends on shade, moisture, and nearby roofs. ARMA says the results of cleaning are only temporary, because spores keep arriving. Plan on checking the roof every 2 to 3 years, which matches our schedule by surface.
ARMA lists steps that make a roof less inviting to growth:
- Trim branches back so more sunlight reaches the roof.
- Clear debris regularly with a leaf blower or another non abrasive method.
- Keep gutters clean. See our gutter cleaning page.
- Do not let an upper roof drain onto a lower roof. Extend the downspout into the lower gutter.
Do Zinc Strips or Algae Resistant Shingles Work?
ARMA says zinc or copper strips, and shingles made with algae resistant copper granules, are options for when you replace a roof. It does not recommend adding strips to an existing roof. The strips need exposed nails, which can cause leaks over time, or they break the sealant bond, which can lead to wind damage.
When Is Roof Cleaning Not Worth It?
Clean the roof when the shingles are sound and the streaks are the main problem. Call a roofer first if you see any of these:
- Curled or lifted shingle edges.
- Bald spots where granules are gone.
- Moss buildup.
- Water stains inside, or an active leak.
- A roof that is near the end of its life.
Roof age also matters for insurance. Florida’s 15 year roof rule is explained in our insurance guide.
How Much Does Roof Soft Washing Cost in Wesley Chapel?

Roof Algae, HOAs, and the Water Order in Wesley Chapel
Pasco County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027. The District allows pressure washing before painting and sealing, and Pasco County lists annual pressure washing as allowed. A purely cosmetic roof cleaning is a gray area, so confirm it with the county. An HOA cannot enforce washing for looks alone while the order is active. See Pasco County water restrictions and pressure washing for details.
The same moisture logic applies to walls. See our guide on green algae on stucco and siding. For the best months to book, read the best time to pressure wash Wesley Chapel guide.
Roof Algae FAQ
Are black streaks on my roof mold or algae?
Almost always algae. ARMA says the black streaks seen on roofs are usually algae, and the most common type is Gloeocapsa magma. It is often mistaken for mold, mildew, soot, or dirt.
Will black roof streaks make me replace my roof?
Not by themselves. ARMA says there is no scientific evidence that algae damages asphalt shingles. An insurer or HOA may still react to the look, so check what your letter says.
Can I clean my roof myself with bleach?
ARMA describes a bleach and water method with a low pressure rinse. Doing it yourself risks falls from a wet roof, plant damage, and skin or eye injuries. A professional is safer.
Do copper or zinc strips stop roof algae?
ARMA lists them as options at reroofing time, but does not recommend adding them to an existing roof. They need exposed nails that can leak, or they break the sealant bond and risk wind damage.
Does roof cleaning void my shingle warranty?
Low pressure cleaning is the method ARMA describes. High pressure is the risk, because it strips granules. Check your own warranty terms, since every manufacturer is different.
Do water restrictions apply to roof cleaning?
They can. Pasco County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027. Washing before painting and sealing is allowed, and purely cosmetic jobs should be confirmed with the county first.
