Can Pressure Washing Damage Stucco or Vinyl Siding? What Is Safe in Wesley Chapel
Can pressure washing damage stucco? Yes, if the pressure is too high. Stucco maker Sto Corp. says to keep pressure between 200 and 500 psi at most, and never above 500. Vinyl siding is tougher, but a stream aimed upward can drive water behind it. Soft washing is the safer default for both.
Can Pressure Washing Damage Stucco?
Can a pressure washer hurt stucco? Yes. Stucco is brittle and porous. Sto Corp. says pressure above 500 psi can destroy the surface integrity of the finish. A strong stream can also force water into cracks and behind the wall, so low pressure is the safer choice.
Damage shows up in a few ways. The textured finish wears smooth or pits. Paint chips off. Water gets behind the finish and later shows up as blisters. Sto says blistering is a common sign of water getting behind the finish from roofs, windows, joints, or ground water.
That is why the safe answer is not a number alone. Distance, nozzle, angle, and the condition of the wall all matter. A wall with open cracks can take on water even at modest pressure.
What Pressure Is Safe for Stucco?
For acrylic finishes, Sto says a garden hose is enough for a full wall. If you use a pressure washer, keep it around 200 to 500 psi with the nozzle several feet from the surface. Never go above 500 psi. Do not use sandblasting, steam, stiff brushes, or solvent cleaners.
That guidance comes from one maker and covers its own finishes. Your wall may differ, so check your builder or paint maker. For EIFS, the foam backed system, Sto’s cleaning guidance also caps the rinse at 500 psi. Our page on how soft washing works explains the low pressure method we use on stucco. ProSoCo, a building products maker, also calls low pressure water the safer direction.
How Do You Tell Stucco From EIFS?
EIFS is a thin coating over foam insulation board. Traditional stucco is hard cement plaster over lath or block. They need different care, because EIFS has a softer core. If you are not sure which you have, ask your builder or check your closing paperwork before anyone washes the wall.
Can You Pressure Wash Vinyl Siding?
Yes, if your manufacturer allows it. Vinyl siding industry guidance says to hold the stream straight at eye level and never aim it upward, because water can be driven behind the siding. A soft wash with a soft brush is the safer option for most homes. Read the vinyl siding cleaning guidance before you start.
What can go wrong with vinyl siding?
- Water forced behind the panels, where it can stay trapped.
- Loose or lifted panels from a strong stream.
- Damage to seals around windows, vents, and light fixtures.
Our guide on green algae on stucco and siding covers both.
Signs Pressure Washing Damaged Your Stucco or Siding
| What you see | What it can mean |
|---|---|
| New chips or pitting in the finish | The surface was eroded by high pressure |
| Cracks that are wider or longer than before | Brittle stucco that took too much force |
| Blisters or bubbles in the finish | Water trapped behind the finish |
| Water stains inside near that wall | Water got into the wall |
| Vinyl panels that rattle or ride up | Panels loosened by a strong stream |
If you see any of these after a wash, stop and take dated photos. Call a contractor before the next cleaning. Sto says water intrusion can lead to peeling finishes and, in serious cases, water damage to structural elements.
When Should You Wait to Wash Until Repairs Are Done?
Stucco is brittle, and Sto says some cracking is normal. But cracks that let water in need repair. Have them checked before any wash. Look for these signs first.
- Cracks wider than a hairline, about 1/32 inch.
- Blisters, bubbles, or soft chalky spots.
- Missing or cracked sealant around windows and doors.
- A gutter or roof edge that drains onto the wall.
Fix the water source first. Sto says to isolate and repair the source of water intrusion before any other repair, or the problem returns.
How Do Pros Wash Stucco and Siding Safely?
- Inspect the walls for cracks, loose spots, and open seals.
- Cover outlets and lights, and wet down plants.
- Apply a cleaning solution that matches the finish, at low pressure.
- Let it work for the time on the label. Sto says bleach needs about 15 minutes to kill algae and mildew, or they come back.
- Rinse from the top down with low pressure water.
- Check the wall when it is dry, and photograph the result.

Washing Stucco Safely in Wesley Chapel Neighborhoods
Stucco homes in Seven Oaks, Wiregrass Ranch, Epperson, Union Park, and Meadow Pointe face the same humidity and the same algae. If you own a newer home, read whether pressure washing is safe for new homes for cure times.
Pasco County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027. The District allows pressure washing before painting and sealing, so a pre paint wash fits that exception. A purely cosmetic wash is a gray area, so confirm it with the county. See Pasco County water restrictions and pressure washing.
Stucco and Vinyl Siding Washing FAQ
Can pressure washing damage stucco?
Yes. Stucco is brittle and porous. Sto Corp. says pressure above 500 psi can destroy the surface integrity of the finish, and a strong stream can force water into cracks and behind the wall.
What psi is safe for stucco?
For acrylic finishes, Sto says to keep a pressure washer around 200 to 500 psi with the nozzle several feet away, and never above 500 psi. A garden hose is enough for a full wall. Check your own wall maker.
Can I pressure wash painted stucco?
Painted stucco has the same limits, and high pressure can strip the paint. Low pressure soft washing is safer. Check your paint maker and test a hidden spot first.
Can pressure washing damage vinyl siding?
Yes, if the stream is aimed upward or too close. Water can be driven behind the panels. Vinyl siding industry guidance says to hold the stream straight at eye level and follow your manufacturer.
Is soft washing safe around windows and seals?
Low pressure is gentler on seals, but a good crew still avoids spraying directly at window edges and caulk, and checks seals before and after.
Can pressure washing cause water damage inside the walls?
It can if water is forced into cracks or behind siding and stays trapped. Sto says water intrusion can lead to peeling finishes and, in serious cases, water damage to structural elements.
Do water restrictions affect washing stucco?
Pasco County is under a water shortage order through March 31, 2027. Washing before painting and sealing is allowed, and purely cosmetic jobs should be confirmed with the county first.
